NAIM AUDIO

One of the best brands of Hi-Fi. Naim Audio has stood the test of time, producing high quality hi-fi since 1973.

This product has stood the test of time and its flagship power amplifier isthe NAP-250 and has been used as a benchmark through all of its various generations from the older chrome bumper right up to the current model.

I have had many of the older versions come in for a restoration and go out performing better than when they were purchased. The reason for this is the capacitors available today are of a higher grade than what was available back in the 1980s.

Inside a Naim Audio NAP-250 power amp. All discrete circuitry, meaning that there are no ICs to go out of production like some other brands, rendering them irreparable. The secret to its performance lies in the quality of parts chosen and the simplicity of its design.

The Naim Audio factory recommend servicing of power supplies (Hicaps, etc) and power amplifiers to be done every 8-10 years. This is because the capacitor’s electrolytic fluid dries out over this time and they can no longer hold the charge they used to. This is a gradual degradation and just like a car slowly wearing out it is not always noticeable until we have it serviced. Other vital components are also changed as a preventative measure against more serious damage that can be caused as they deteriorate. CD player laser mechanisms invariably fail over time, if the mechanism is still available then I can change it, solving disc reading issues ninety percent of the time.

LINN SONDEK LP-12

The sound of a good quality record player is often a lot more pleasurable than that of a CD player.

There is no voodoo or magic secret to getting a Linn LP-12 sounding its best, however there are procedures to follow and in a certain order. I have had the good fortune to be trained by someone who had many years of experience with these turntables and have also had training from Linn and their distributors.

There are many options available for Linn LP-12 upgrades, but if it is an older model, the Cirkus kit is probably the most beneficial. It offers a new bearing housing, new inner platter, new belt and all new suspension. Depending on the arm (and the budget), I fit Ortofon, Linn, Dynavector or Lyra cartridges. Just like any electronic power supply the Valhalla board should also be recapped if fitted. Check out the Linn page in our store for refurbished units and parts.

I have found that replacing the older arm leads with a Nordost armlead makes a considerable improvement as the dielectric insulator breaks down and becomes brittle over the years. Not to mention that the Nordost equivalent is of a higher quality to begin with. Other cosmetic upgrades can be performed like painting the plinth a satin black and replacing the lid with a newer clear one.

REGA

Rega turntables are of high quality and very reliable. Fantastic British engineering and assembled by hand in the UK.

There is not much to go wrong in a Rega turntable, but general maintenance like changing the oil, cartridge and belt will be required over the years.

Motor upgrade kits are available from $299 for all older Rega turntables, offering a better and quieter motor for more stable speed control and therefore better sound.

Rega cartridges are available at affordable prices, starting at only $65. One of the simplest upgrades is replacing the belt with the higher spec EBLT Reference drive belt at $75.
